These solve different problems. Proton VPN’s free tier is the real headline — it’s one of the only free VPN plans with no data cap and no ads, audited the same way as the paid product, which makes it a genuinely low-risk way to try a VPN with zero financial commitment (see our free vs paid VPNs guide). The trade-off is real too: the free tier is capped to one device and ten server countries. NordVPN doesn’t offer a free tier at all, but its entry paid plan costs less than Proton’s paid Plus tier, covers more devices out of the gate, and reaches a far larger server network. If cost is genuinely zero right now, Proton’s free plan is honestly good. If you’re paying either way, NordVPN’s paid tier gives more for less.
